Don't Make Drills. Make Holes

Don't Make Drills. Make Holes

There’s a line from one of the best AI articles I’ve read: “Don’t make drills. Make holes.”

It’s a clever way of saying: people don’t buy tools for the sake of tools—they buy outcomes.  That framing matters, especially right now in healthcare.

Because if you’re a practice, a specialty group, or a hospital leader evaluating AI, you’re not really asking: Which AI tool should I buy?

What you’re really asking is: What will actually help me solve my problems and deliver results?

Why This Question Matters Now

Here’s the reality: most organizations are still early in their AI journey. Unless you’re one of the very first health systems experimenting with AI at scale, you’re probably trying to figure out where to start.

Do you launch an R&D project? Try a chatbot? Pilot a single point solution for prior auth or scheduling?

The truth: those approaches often create more noise than progress. They add another experiment to manage, another project to babysit, another login for staff to wrestle with.

What your staff and administrators have been telling us is painfully consistent:

  • They don’t need another experiment.
  • They don’t want more tools.
  • They just want to get their jobs done faster and easier.

And that’s exactly where the distinction between drills and holes matters most.

What AI Should Unlock in Healthcare

This is where it helps to think in categories.

Over time, certain types of platforms define their markets:

  • CRM defined how organizations manage relationships.
  • EHR defined how healthcare manages patient records.

In the coming decade, we believe healthcare will have another defining category: the Agentic Orchestration Platform (AOP).

Why? Because AI in healthcare can’t survive as a series of disconnected apps or experiments. It only creates lasting value when it orchestrates workflows, accelerates results, and consistently delivers outcomes.

That’s the bar. And it’s why we built Calvient.

Calvient: Built for Outcomes, Not Experiments

If we were consulting with your team today, here’s what we would tell you:

Stop looking for tools. Start looking for platforms that deliver results.  That’s why Calvient exists.

  • Our AI phone agent waits on hold and navigates payer phone trees.
  • Our Chrome Extension speeds you through clunky portals.
  • Our EHR integration (or natural language rules) automatically extracts records for payers and referrals.

Yes, we also provide the “hand tools” like fax, patient engagement, and document management.  But the core is different: Calvient is workflow-first.

It’s designed to orchestrate the steps, remove the friction, and deliver the end result you actually need—whether that’s a completed prior authorization, a clean referral, or a fully routed document.

Leading the Next Category

AI in healthcare will sort itself out in the coming years. Point solutions will rise and fall. Hype cycles will come and go.

But the organizations that thrive will be the ones that chose platforms built to orchestrate, automate, and accelerate real outcomes.

That’s the category we see coming. That’s the category we’re building.  And that’s why Calvient is more than a tool. It’s the platform you need to get the job done.
